Our History

ATSWA Trust is a humanitarian, non-profit organization committed to transforming lives through inclusive and sustainable development. What began as a grassroots response to human suffering has evolved into a multi-sectoral development institution working across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka.

Our journey started in 1997 as an informal residential initiative along the Tamil Nadu–Andhra Pradesh border regions, deeply affected by drought, agrarian distress, migration, and extreme poverty. Families were displaced, livelihoods collapsed, and many children were left abandoned, malnourished, and without care. Rising social vulnerabilities, including the spread of HIV/AIDS, further pushed children into crisis.

In response, Seva S. Chelladurai and S. Arputharaj opened their own home to shelter vulnerable children despite their limited means. What began with a few children grew steadily, and by 2004, 47 orphaned and semi-orphaned children were receiving residential care, education support, and protection.

Recognizing that vulnerability extended beyond shelter, ATSWA expanded its focus to address interconnected challenges—health, education, livelihoods, and social exclusion. The devastation of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami further intensified community needs, leading to the formal registration of ATSWA Trust on February 23, 2005, under the Tamil Nadu Trust Act.

Founder Story

S. A. Chelladurai, Founder of ATSWA Trust

Born into a poor family in Madanambedu village on the Tamil Nadu–Andhra Pradesh border, Chelladurai experienced hunger, social discrimination, and limited access to education growing up in extreme poverty.

His life changed when he was admitted to the CSI Ikkadu Boys Home and supported through the Kindernothilfe foster care program, which enabled him to complete his schooling and pursue technical education. This transformative experience shaped his lifelong commitment to serving vulnerable communities.

While working at the grassroots level, Chelladurai, along with his brother S. Arputharaj, witnessed severe distress among marginalized families—children abandoned due to poverty, the rise of HIV/AIDS, displacement caused by drought, and the vulnerability of children of commercial sex workers.

Moved by these realities, and inspired by the care he himself had received, the brothers opened the doors of their own home to shelter and support children in need, despite their limited financial means.

"What began as a small act of compassion grew into a structured residential care initiative, eventually leading to the establishment of ATSWA Trust in 2005."

The “Apple Seed Effect”

Guided by the belief that one transformed life can create change for many—the founders continue to dedicate their lives to ensuring that vulnerable children and communities receive opportunities to live with dignity and hope.
