Chennai has faced several major disasters since 2002, impacting the city significantly. ATSWA was there with the people helping them to rebuild their lives and have quick resilience time. It was a time to join hands with the like-minded NGOs, state/central governments, cheerful individual, group and corporate donors.
We were present in Tiruvallur, Chennai, Nagapattinam districts of Tamil Nadu and Chitoor district of Andhra Pradesh.
In December 2015, Chennai experienced one of the worst floods in its history due to exceptionally heavy rainfall during the northeast monsoon. The city and its suburbs were inundated, leading to massive disruptions in daily life, displacement of thousands of people, and significant damage to infrastructure.
ATSWA was able to provide 24587 families of Chennai, Pazhaverkadu, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram with emergency hygienic kits, food packets, counseling, medical/medicinal support, provisions, emergency household kits, cloths, etc.
On December 12, 2016, Cyclone Vardah made landfall near Chennai, bringing heavy rains and winds of up to 140 km/hr. The cyclone caused extensive damage to property, uprooted thousands of trees, and resulted in widespread power outages. It was one of the most powerful cyclones to strike Chennai in decades.
ATSWA was able to provide 12326 families of Chennai, Pazhaverkadu, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram with emergency hygienic kits, food packets, counseling, medical/medicinal support, provisions, emergency household kits, cloths, etc.
ATSWA helped 10000 families of delta regions and 6500 families affected by Cyclone Gaja which primarily affected the delta regions of Tamil Nadu, it also brought heavy rains and strong winds to Chennai in November 2018. The cyclone caused moderate damage in the city but led to significant agricultural and infrastructural damage in other parts of the state.
Unprecedented adversary COVID-19 invaded Earth in December 2019. While not a natural disaster, the COVID-19 pandemic had a profound impact on Chennai, as it did on the rest of the world. The city saw multiple waves of infections, with severe strains on healthcare infrastructure, economic disruptions, and significant loss of life. ATSWA initiated several partnership campaigns with corporates like ‘Habitat for Humanity’ and financial support from Royal Enfield, WIPRO, ASPARE, Smile Foundation, TRRAIN, Don Bosco, cheerful friends and well-wishers.
ATSWA responded to the emerging crisis which affects those living at the fringes of society most. Since the COVID-19 crisis, ATSWA, in close coordination with State Government and District Administration, has stepped in to provide relief by providing food and relief to thousands of people across Chennai by adhering to all safety and hygiene measures and guidelines of the state government.

In November 2020, Cyclone Nivar struck the Tamil Nadu coast near Chennai. The cyclone brought heavy rains and strong winds, causing flooding and power outages in parts of the city. Although the damage in Chennai was less severe compared to other regions, it disrupted normal life significantly. 2500 families supported with emergency hygienic kits, face mask, sanitary kits, dry ration, mats, pillows and mosquito nets.
1st week of December spoiled all festive moods as 2 days of heavy rainfall devastated all expectations of people living in Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kanchipuram districts of Tamil Nadu state. Nearly 60-65cms of rainfall was too much for anyone to imagine and work. Villages of Pazhaverkadu as usual were submerged under water, isolating them from outside world. All stumbled and were speechless clueless for couple of days.
Through Disaster Response & Risk Reduction project ATSWA was able to quench the thirst of 4000 families.
