ROAD SAFETY AWARENESS/TRAINING

Road safety awareness and training programs was done through « Together for Safer Roads in the State of Tamil Nadu » project with the generous support of PSA Fondation (Germany) through Habitat for Humanity – India. Motto of the project is to have safer roads in Tamil Nadu minimizing road accidents among school children and public drivers. End Line Evaluation was done to access the program impact created by us. Evaluation report clearly mirrors the effort, commitment and challenges faced by our committed energetic workforce in implementing this program in Chennai, one of the leading metros/cities in road accidents and death tolls. Children were specially trained to know the importance of safe driving. A song (in Tamil) with key messages from the KAP survey was recorded by a famous cine singer ‘Gana’ Bala in Chennai. The beneficiaries learned the importance on Why Road Safety Education is Essential, Prevalence of Road Crashes, Pedestrian Safety, Travelling Safely to School, Traffic Controlling Systems, Reasons for incidents and corrective actions, Identify the Risk and Hazards, First Aid and Good Samaritan Law on safe driving, obeying traffic rules, knowing various road signage, helping accident victims during emergencies and giving trauma care. Survey on Risky Behavior was successfully completed with 1633 respondents from 11 school going children, parents and teachers. 450 teens, 300 women participated in the signature campaign to take pledge on safer roads, driving and so on.

Wall paintings near schools displaying the importance of project indicators were effective information carrier.

Indoor Traffic Simulation Park

Chennai’s first Indoor Traffic Simulation Park in a school was installed @ Madras Christian College school, Chetpet, Chennai through this project. It has floor Road markings, Wall paintings depicting various signs on road signals, bike simulator, safety gears and little communicator – seat belt safety. Children from nearby schools are invited to visit this simulation park to have knowledge on road safety.

Truck/Lorry Drivers Awareness

ATSWA in association with Amana Consultant Private Limited, Mumbai & Macquarie, Australia gave awareness trainings on Road Safety to all drivers who pass through Vijayawada – Gummidipoondi NH route. The mission of this project was to achieve a 50% drop in road accidents in National Highways. Objectives were achieved through Data collection of Truck Drivers, knowledge Sharing, collaboration with nearby Toll plazas, Mini Lorry/Lorry owners association to disseminate information about road safety, to know dangers involved in reckless driving, overtaking and unsafe travel between the vehicles.

336 public carrier drivers, 1020 truck drivers were gathered through various FGDs to give awareness on road safety risk factors and on preventing accidents. Awareness camps were organized at Naidupet, Polireddypalem, Pindipalem, Tada, Kondurusataram, Mavillapadu, Nell Aballi, Panduluru, Rettapalli, Rajupalem, Kagithalapudi, Manubollu villages. Infograghic stickers, recharge coupons, torch, towels wipers and stickers were provided to all truck drivers.
