Environment & Ecological Sustainability
Restoring Nature. Empowering Communities. Building Climate Resilience.
ATSWA Trust integrates environmental protection with community development, recognizing that ecological degradation directly impacts the livelihoods of small and marginal farmers, coastal communities, and vulnerable households. Through structured green initiatives, sustainable agriculture promotion, and youth-led environmental action, the programme advances long-term climate resilience.
Green Community Initiative (2023โ2024)
Supported by Stichting Child Tuition Programme
During 2023โ2024, ATSWA implemented the Green Community initiative in Sathyavedu and surrounding regions, facilitating the plantation of 1,000 trees to enhance local biodiversity and mitigate climate impact. The initiative also promoted 250 kitchen and family gardens, enabling households to cultivate vegetables, herbs, and spices for nutritional security and reduced market dependency.
A community seed bank for rare and indigenous species was strengthened to preserve traditional crop varieties and promote biodiversity conservation. Awareness sessions for small and marginal farmers focused on non-pesticide management and eco-friendly fertilizers, encouraging a shift toward sustainable agricultural practices.
Sustainable & Organic Farming Systems (2017)
Supported by Global Green Grants Fund (GGF), Tirupati District
In 2017, ATSWA promoted organic farming systems and climate-resilient agricultural practices in Tirupati District. Farmers were trained in eco-friendly soil conditioning methods, including coir pith applications, natural fertilizers, and non-chemical pest management. The programme also supported livestock and poultry-based supplementary livelihoods to diversify income sources and reduce agricultural vulnerability.
Farmer Empowerment & Market Linkage โ Kisan Sabha Initiative (2023)
In 2023, ATSWA facilitated access to Kisan Sabha Cards, enabling small and marginal farmers to connect directly with mandi dealers and reduce exploitation by intermediaries. Seed money support was extended to vulnerable farmers to stabilize cultivation cycles and strengthen economic resilience.
Pulicat Eco-Restoration & Coastal Protection (2025)
Supported by ELCA & Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
In 2025, ATSWA launched a large-scale eco-restoration initiative in the Pulicat region, focusing on lake restoration, beach clean-up drives, and pond rejuvenation activities. The programme mobilized 600 adolescents, who actively participated in environmental leadership activities and formed structured youth eco-groups within their villages.
As part of the restoration drive, 1,200 palm trees and oak tree varieties were planted to strengthen coastal green cover and prevent soil erosion. Community volunteers partnered with ELCA to promote collective environmental stewardship and climate awareness across coastal hamlets.
